Living Simply with God and Neighbor : A 40 day Lenten Fast beginning February 17th

February 17

Put a prayer list on your refrigerator; use pictures of real people.

Start a journal about the struggle to live simply.

Contribute $1 into your collection bank for ELCA World Hunger for every pound you feel overweight

Smile because your glass is half full, not half empty.

Give your blessings specific names and, in prayer, thank God for them.

Memorize a scripture passage about hunger.

Matthew 25:33-40 or

Luke 3:10-11

Save all your trash today. Look at how much you have; think of ways to reduce waste.

February 24

Turn off your air-conditioning today (or lower your heat). Put $1 into your bank for World Hunger.

Stop saving items to “read later”. Read them now or recycle them.

Teach your children how to fix things rather than throwing them away.

Drink water instead of soft drinks; eat smaller portions of food.

Think of a gift you would like for yourself; now purchase it and give it to someone who really needs it.

For each angry or sad person you encounter today, help another one laugh. Laughter heals.

Every time you drive your car today, put $1 in your bank to help combat global climate change.

March 3

Don’t worry about small things; try to do something about bigger problems today.

Think about the first thing you touch today. How much value does it have compared with people?

Hand wash dishes for an entire week starting today. Donate a $1 to World Hunger each day.

Take time to walk with your friends or family after dinner. Make it a walk with God.

For dinner or snack, eat a vegetable or fruit native to another country. Pray for those who grew it.

Pray that others - your family, people at school or work will join you in living more simply.

Weigh what you throw away today. How much was truly not usable? How much did you discard without thinking.

March 10

Buy used clothing from thrift shops. Put the money saved toward ELCA World Hunger.

Engage in 1 hour of restful meditation, retreat, or reading scripture or other devotional materials.

Write notes today to encourage your loved ones reminding them how special they are to you.

Save water: Take 5 minute showers today and for the rest of the week.

Plan today how you will decrease your daily spending by living with less for a month.

Talk together with your family about the size of your garbage can; what would it take to adjust to a smaller size?

Telephone a friend or loved one you have not seen lately; talk about what’s important.

March 17

Begin this day in prayer asking God for an opportunity to share his love with someone in a new way.

Prepare a cold meal and use candlelight rather than electricity. Consider doing this again.

Go for a walk with your family or friends to pick up trash and recyclables.

Find out where you can recycle office paper & junk mail.

Cut down on the use of all paper.

Extend small kindnesses to others: smile, open a door for someone, give our place in line to someone.

Commit to find others who will pledge to recycle.

March 24

Take a walk outside and look for the smallest and largest evidence of God’s created beauty.

Spend time with your family without TV, radio or other electronics.

Determine how you will live for one year with your old TV, computer and cell phone and be satisfied with that decision .

For one 24 hour period this week have your family live in only 1 room of your home.

Decided what you can continue to do for the next month, year.
